WooCommerce and Mailchimp, ready to switch on

A completed order tags the buyer in Mailchimp with the product category and whether it's a first or a repeat purchase, only customers who ticked the marketing box are added, and an unsubscribe is written back to the customer record, all through the store's REST API with nothing installed on WordPress. You paste two keys in your account and it runs, in about ten minutes.

No setup fee, cancel any month, and a person on live chat if a key doesn't work.

There's an official Mailchimp for WooCommerce plugin already.

There is, and Mailchimp's help says it adds your WooCommerce customers and their order information to your audience, with abandoned cart and e-commerce automations on top. It's a plugin on your WordPress site, and for many stores it's the right choice. This pair installs nothing: it reads the store through its REST API and writes tags by rules you set. If the plugin fits, we'll say so.

How to set up WooCommerce and Mailchimp

Ten minutes of your time, then it's ours.

  1. Choose WooCommerce and Mailchimp
Press Connect. This pair is already selected on the checkout page at $39 a month, and there's nothing else to pick.
  2. Pay and open your account
Card or invoice, about two minutes. The account opens with this integration waiting for its two keys.
  3. Paste the WooCommerce REST API keys and the Mailchimp API key
    • WooCommerce REST API keys: in WordPress open WooCommerce, then Settings, then Advanced, then REST API, and press Add key. Full WooCommerce guide
    • Mailchimp API key: in Mailchimp open your profile icon, then Profile, then Extras, then API keys. Full Mailchimp guide
Each screen carries the full guide with the exact menu names, about five minutes for both.
  4. We check both keys
Each key is checked against WooCommerce's and Mailchimp's own API the moment you paste it. If one doesn't pass, the screen says what to fix, and a person joins the chat if that isn't enough.
  5. Place one test order, then it's Running
A minute or two. Create a test order with your own email in WooCommerce and watch the tag land in Mailchimp. From then on we watch it for you.

When WooCommerce or Mailchimp changes its API, we fix it within a working day. You don't get a ticket to solve.

Before you decide

What about customers who never ticked the marketing box?

They are never added. Consent is read from the customer on every order, so someone who ticks it later joins later, and someone who never did stays out.

Does it send any email?

No. It tags and fills fields. What goes out stays inside Mailchimp, with your own automations and your own unsubscribes.

Which order status counts?

Processing adds the buyer, completed tags the purchase. Pending and on-hold do nothing, because an unpaid order is not a customer yet. If your store skips processing, tell us and we move the trigger.

Can you integrate Mailchimp with WordPress?

With a WooCommerce store on WordPress, yes, and this pair does it without installing anything on the site: it reads the store through the WooCommerce REST API keys you create under WooCommerce, Settings, Advanced, REST API. Buyers who ticked the marketing box join the audience, orders add tags, and an unsubscribe is written back to the customer. A WordPress site without WooCommerce isn't covered by this pair.

Is there a Mailchimp plugin for WordPress?

Yes, Mailchimp's own WooCommerce plugin (above) and others. A plugin lives on your WordPress site and its hosting. This pair runs outside the site through the REST API, with tags and fields written by rules you set, and a person keeps it working. If the plugin fits, we'll say so.

What integrations does Mailchimp have?

Ready-made on Dovetly, Mailchimp pairs with Stripe, HubSpot, Shopify, WooCommerce, Pipedrive and Google Sheets. Every one of them uses the same Mailchimp API key, which carries its data center in the part after the dash. For anything else, describe it and a person replies with a price within a working hour.

Anything to know about WooCommerce?

The REST API needs pretty permalinks switched on in WordPress, otherwise the API address doesn't answer at all.

Anything to know about Mailchimp?

The data center is part of the key itself, the bit after the dash, so that one key is all we need to reach your account.

What if mine is a bit different?

Tell us what should go where in plain words. Small changes to the rules above are usually free; bigger ones we price the same day and build into the same account.
