Asana already has a Slack app. What does this add?

Asana for Slack is good, and it works the other way too: Asana's help page says you can turn messages into tasks and act on tasks from Slack. If that's what you use, keep it. This pair is for teams that want a bot posting by rules nobody maintains, milestone and status posts, private morning lists, and one setup instead of every teammate connecting an account. It never edits Asana.

How to set up Slack and Asana

Ten minutes of your time, then it's ours.

  1. Choose Slack and Asana
    Press Connect. This pair is already selected on the checkout page at $39 a month, and there's nothing else to pick.
  2. Pay and open your account
    Card or invoice, about two minutes. The account opens with this integration waiting for its two keys.
  3. Paste the Slack bot token and the Asana personal access token

  4. We check both keys
    Each key is checked against Slack's and Asana's own API the moment you paste it. If one doesn't pass, the screen says what to fix, and a person joins the chat if that isn't enough.
  5. Create one test task, then it's Running
    A minute or two. Create a task in Asana and watch the post arrive in the channel. From then on we watch it for you.

Can we create a task from a message?

Not in this one; it runs into the chat. If a message should become a task, describe it and we price it.

How do we keep it quiet?

Name the projects and the moves worth posting. Everything else stays on the board.

Does it need a paid Asana plan?

The token works on any plan. Milestones, approvals and status updates post only if your Asana plan has them, which is Asana's rule, not ours. Tasks and completions post on every plan.

Can I use Asana with Slack?

Yes, and there are two ways. Asana's own Slack app lets people act on tasks from Slack. This pair is a bot that posts by rules: tasks added to the projects you name, milestones, approvals and status updates go to the channel mapped to each project, and each assignee gets a private morning list. Nobody connects a personal account, and Asana is never edited.

How do I remove the Asana integration from Slack?

Asana's own app is removed in Slack's app settings, like any other Slack app. This pair is different: nothing was installed in Slack or Asana, so there's nothing to uninstall. You cancel it from your Dovetly account any month, and the bot stops posting.

Anything to know about Slack?

The bot has to be invited to a channel before it can post there; that's one command in Slack.

Anything to know about Asana?

A personal access token acts as your user, so tasks are created in your name and only in projects that user can see.
